Save The Veterans Building For Veterans

Believe in helping Vets?  We want to hear from you!

Historic Preservation Commission Meeting:

San Francisco City Hall, Room 400
Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place
San Francisco, CA 94103

San Francisco City Hall

A newly renovated Veterans Building should continue to serve the San Francisco Veterans community. We need your support to ensure the use of this historic building for the wave of returning Veterans who are expected to settle in the Bay Area.

Add Your Voice to help our veterans community.

A Place To Grow Make sure redesign plans include space to grow for the returning Veterans programs.

Help Create A New Community In addition to traditional programs the building can be a place of healing and growth — a new community of voices, artist, writers, poets, filmmakers — to tell the Veterans’ stories.

San Francisco's Historic War Memorial Veterans Building

San Francisco’s Historic War Memorial Veterans Building

History: The War Memorial Veterans Building was built in the service of Peace and to serve Veterans.  The United Nations Charter was signed in the War Memorial Veterans Building’s Veterans Theater in 1945 (1978 renamed the Herbst Theatre), leading to the creation of the United Nations. It is also where the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco (the peace treaty that officially ended the Pacific War with the Empire of Japan, which had surrendered in 1945) was signed.
